THE SCHOOL Miss Edgar's & Miss Cramp's School (ECS), established in 1909, is an independent English language day school for girls located in a residential area of the city of Westmount within walking distance of downtown Montreal. This college preparatory school is for academically qualified students from Kindergarten to Grade 11. It has a highly selective admissions process; 100% of its graduates go on to college or university.
ACCREDITATION & AFFILIATION Miss Edgar's and Miss Cramp's School is accredited by the Ministry of Education of Quebec. It is a member of the Quebec, the Canadian and the National (American) Association of Independent Schools.
THE FACULTY There are 42 teachers, all of who have an undergraduate degree. 12 have Masters degrees and 6 have specialist certificates or diplomas.
ENROLLMENT There are 330 students from Kindergarten through Grade 11. The Junior School has 108 girls from Kindergarten to Grade 5 and the Middle and Senior Schools have 222 girls, approximately 18-20 per homeroom. The small school size provides students with individualized teaching, a family-like atmosphere and the opportunity for a personal and differentiated approach to learning.
ACADEMIC A total of 54 credits, accumulated in Grades 10 and 11, are required to obtain the high school leaving diploma from the Ministry of Education of Quebec. To graduate from ECS a girl must meet the above requirements by taking the mandated courses as well as those set by the School. No student may graduate if she fails more than one subject during her senior year. Girls at ECS graduate with a minimum of 72 credits.
CLASS RANK The school does not rank its students but the Ministry of Education (MELS) assigns quintile and percentile rankings to those subjects it examines. In the most recent rankings, ECS was the number one English school (public and private combined) in the High School Leaving examinations as it has been for 8 out of the last 10 years.
GRADING SYSTEMS ECS marks its students on a 0-100 numerical scale two times per year. The other two report cards contain letter grades where A = Excellent B = Good, C = Average, D = Experiencing difficulty, F = Fail. Honour Roll is awarded to those students with an average of 85% and no mark under 75%.
AP COURSES The School offers students in Grade 11 the opportunity to take Advanced Placement Examinations in French and Spanish.
